Wendy’s journey with Stepping Stone Emergency Housing began humbly in 2021, when she started volunteering to deliver surplus food from local schools to the shelter. Over the years, she witnessed firsthand the profound impact these donations had—not only on the residents but also on the cafeteria workers she affectionately calls “fierce mama bears.” Their joy in knowing the food was used to nourish Stepping Stone’s community inspired Wendy to deepen her connection to the shelter’s mission.
Recently, Wendy and her family made an extraordinary gift to Stepping Stone following the sale of her husband’s home. While the donation had practical tax benefits, her decision to give was guided by a heartfelt “hidden agenda.” As Wendy observed shifts in food availability over time, she became determined to ensure Stepping Stone could maximize resources and reduce waste. Her gift, designated for kitchen upgrades, is a step toward laying the groundwork for increased food donations from local schools—saving money for the shelter, reducing food waste, and bringing joy to her beloved “mama bears.”
Wendy’s story reflects the powerful relationship between volunteering and giving. What began as an act of service became a deeper commitment to support Stepping Stone’s work, driven by her belief in our mission and her desire to make a meaningful difference.
Wendy’s humility in sharing her story is emblematic of her character. She often deflects the spotlight, suggesting others deserve equal praise. However, her transformative gift is an inspiring testament to how volunteers can evolve into advocates, champions, and visionaries for the causes they hold dear.
