At Stepping Stone Emergency Housing (SSEH), our volunteers embody the heart of our mission, providing invaluable support to individuals experiencing homelessness. This month, we shine a spotlight on Elizabeth, whose dedication and warmth have made a significant impact in our community.
A Lifelong Commitment to Service
After 42 years of teaching, Elizabeth always envisioned a retirement filled with volunteer work. Once she returned to her roots in Minnesota after living up north for over 30 years, she began searching for opportunities to give back. Her journey started with hospice, where she spent five years, followed by her work with Haven for Heroes, a sober housing program for homeless veterans.
“I thought, ‘I still have some time left during my week,’” Elizabeth shared. Her interest in Stepping Stone was sparked by a high school friend who had benefited from our shelter’s services. Recognizing the need and wanting to make a difference, she reached out to become a volunteer.
Embracing New Challenges
Elizabeth has been volunteering at SSEH for about a year now, contributing her time and talents in various ways. Initially, she worked in the clothing room but soon realized it was a bit overwhelming. Instead, she suggested a role that aligned with her strengths: writing thank-you notes to donors.
“I knew it was something that I could do,” Elizabeth explained. “It’s important to acknowledge the generosity of our donors and show them that their contributions matter.”
In addition to writing thank-you notes, Elizabeth also assists with filing for case managers, ensuring that all resident files are organized and accessible. Her commitment is evident as she dedicates a four-hour shift each week to these tasks.
Finding Community and Connection
When asked about her experience, Elizabeth emphasized the common humanity she sees in the residents. “The Stepping Stone residents are just like anybody else,” she said. “They’re just people that need some help to get their lives back on track.”
Elizabeth appreciates the organization and empathy displayed by the SSEH staff, noting how they interact with residents in a caring and respectful manner. “It’s impressive to see how well-organized Stepping Stone is and how kind the people are.”
Encouraging Others to Get Involved
For anyone considering volunteering at SSEH, Elizabeth encourages them to take the plunge. “It might feel uncomfortable at first, but stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to rewarding experiences,” she said. “There are so many different ways to volunteer, and each person can find a fit that matches their skills and passions.”
Elizabeth also highlights the generosity of the community. “It’s inspiring to see how many people contribute to Stepping Stone, whether financially or through donations,” she noted. “I’m grateful for everyone who helps.”
