At Stepping Stone Emergency Housing, we are fortunate to have passionate and dedicated leaders who work tirelessly to support individuals experiencing homelessness. One of those leaders is Dani Pappas, our Program Manager, who has played a crucial role in expanding and strengthening the programs that help our residents transition into stable housing.

A Passion for Housing and Helping Others

Dani’s journey into housing services began with a deep belief that everyone deserves a roof over their head. After earning her Bachelor’s in Social Work from the University of Minnesota Duluth, she set her sights on a career in housing services, knowing it was the best way she could make a difference.

“I always knew I wanted to work in housing,” Dani shared. “It’s funny because when I was little, I thought I’d become a real estate agent—so in a way, I did end up in housing, just in a different capacity!”

Dani continued to grow her expertise, earning her Master’s in Social Work from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in 2024 while working at Stepping Stone as a Program Coordinator. During that time, she also interned at New Way Alliance, where she conducted diagnostic assessments, provided therapy, and led trauma skills groups. This experience further deepened her understanding of the challenges individuals face when overcoming homelessness.

The Creation of the Program Manager Role

Recognizing the need for stronger support and oversight in housing stabilization, Dani and Stepping Stone’s Executive Director, Steve Griffiths, developed the Program Manager position in 2023.

“Our Program Director was managing everything—case managers, advocates, and our Washington County location,” Dani explained. “We saw an opportunity to divide some of that work and create a stronger, more focused leadership structure.”

Dani’s role as Program Manager encompasses supervising the in-house case managers and the newly formed Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) team. Since launching the HSS program, Stepping Stone has grown to serve 40 clients, with more expansion planned for the future.

Building a Stronger Housing Stabilization Program

One of Dani’s proudest accomplishments is the Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program, which helps individuals not only get housed but also remain housed by providing continued support and case management after they transition into permanent housing.

“In the past, once someone left the shelter and got housing, our work kind of ended there,” Dani said. “But now, with HSS, we can stay with them through the transition, helping them adjust and sustain their housing long-term. It closes the loop and provides the safety net people need.”

This wraparound approach to housing support ensures that residents have the tools they need to build stable, self-sufficient lives.

A Vision for the Future

Dani envisions continued growth for Stepping Stone’s programs, particularly as the Stillwater location expands. Her goal is to build a larger HSS team that can reach more individuals and provide even stronger support.

“I’m excited for what’s to come,” Dani said. “We’re in a strong, stable place as an organization, and I can’t wait to see how we continue to expand our mission.”
