At Stepping Stone Emergency Housing, we strive to provide more than just the essentials for our residents; we aim to offer them dignity and respect through every aspect of their stay, including our clothing closet. Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Sue Turnquist, a dedicated volunteer who has been instrumental in transforming our clothing closet into a space that feels more like a boutique than a traditional thrift store. Here’s a look at her journey and the impact of her work.
A New Beginning
Sue Turnquist joined us in February 2024 through Anoka County’s program for individuals aged 55 and over. After losing her job and retiring, Sue sought a meaningful way to contribute her time and talents. Her decision to volunteer at Stepping Stone was driven by a desire to help others and make a positive difference. As she explored our policies and mission, she felt a strong connection and knew this was where she needed to be.
Creating a Boutique Experience
When Sue first arrived, the clothing closet was somewhat disorganized, resembling more of a thrift store or garage sale setup. It was clear that a new approach was needed to make the space more welcoming and effective. Sue took on the challenge with enthusiasm, developing a system to better organize the clothing. She implemented changes to create a more pleasant and intuitive shopping experience for our residents.
Sue’s improvements included:
- Organizational Changes: Clothes were sorted by size and type, with dedicated sections for men’s and women’s clothing. Seasonal items were also organized, ensuring that the closet is always stocked with appropriate wear.
- Enhanced Presentation: Sue introduced special hangers and bins from local stores like Dollar Tree to keep items neatly displayed and easy to find. She also labeled sectionsto help residents navigate the closet more easily.
- Personalized Assistance: Sue takes the time to ask residents about their needs—whether they are looking for everyday wear, job interview attire, or clothing for special occasions. She guides them through the selection process and even provides bags for them to take their items to their rooms.
Sue reflects on her work:
“Personally, it has given me a lot of great insight into people, people in need, you know, and to help these people. If clothes make them happy, and I think clothes make you happy. When you got something new, even though it’s used, it makes you feel good that you can dress appropriately and go out and about.”
A Personal Impact
Sue’s role extends beyond organization; it’s about building connections and providing a sense of pride for the residents. She shares that her work has given her valuable insights into the lives of those in need and the joy that well-chosen clothing can bring. By ensuring residents have access to appropriate and stylish clothing, Sue helps them feel good about themselves and their appearance.
As Sue puts it, “I like talking to the people and you learn a lot about people. I make a list of what they say they need so then I can go up to the desk and tell the people at the desk that they have found some clothes if they want to come down and look at them they can. For personally, I find it very rewarding.”
Looking Forward
Sue’s efforts have had a profound impact on our clothing closet and the experiences of our residents. Her dedication to creating a boutique-like environment helps affirm our values of dignity and respect. She finds great fulfillment in knowing that her work supports residents in their journey toward stability and self-sufficiency.
Sue’s story is a testament to the power of community and the difference that compassionate volunteers can make. We are grateful for her contributions and the positive change she has brought to our clothing closet.
