At Stepping Stone Emergency Housing, we believe in the power of second chances. Few embody that belief more than Julie Jackson, one of our dedicated Shelter Advocates. Julie’s path to Stepping Stone is one marked by challenges, transformation, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

For 35 years, Julie worked in the hotel industry, starting at the front desk and eventually becoming a general manager. After the loss of her husband in 2002, her life took a difficult turn. She battled addiction, experienced incarceration, and faced numerous setbacks. But Julie refused to give up. Through treatment, peer support, and sheer determination, she rebuilt her life—celebrating nearly four years of sobriety.

Today, Julie uses her experiences to connect with and inspire our residents. As a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, she knows firsthand the struggles many of our residents face. “I’ve been where these people are,” Julie shares. “I want to show them that there are second chances, and you can get your life together—one step at a time.”

Julie’s passion extends beyond her daily work. She is currently developing a recovery group at the shelter, creating a space where residents in recovery can support each other and share their journeys. Her lived experience allows her to meet residents with empathy and understanding that words alone cannot convey.

Outside of work, Julie loves spending time with her two grown children, her two grandchildren—Lennox (6) and Rihanna (13)—and her two beloved cats. She is deeply grateful for her supportive family and the community that has walked alongside her through difficult times.

Julie also uses every opportunity to raise awareness about homelessness in the suburbs. “A lot of people don’t realize how many homeless people there are out here. It’s not as visible as it is in the city. But the need is real, and the generosity of our community has been incredible.”

Her story is one of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of love and support. At Stepping Stone, we’re honored to have Julie as part of our team—someone who reminds us daily that no matter how many chances it takes, there is always a way forward.
